Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain.

Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker.

The ID card plan is one of several steps advocates of an immigration overhaul are taking to address concerns that have defeated similar bills in the past.

The uphill effort to pass a bill is being led by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who plan to meet with President Barack Obama as soon as this week to update him on their work. An administration official said the White House had no position on the biometric card.

"It's the nub of solving the immigration dilemma politically speaking," Schumer said in an interview. The card, he said, would directly answer concerns that after legislation is signed, another wave of illegal immigrants would arrive. "If you say they can't get a job when they come here, you'll stop it."

The biggest objections to the biometric cards may come from privacy advocates, who fear they would become de facto national ID cards that enable the government to track citizens.

"It is fundamentally a massive invasion of people's privacy," said Chris Calabrese, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union. "We're not only talking about fingerprinting every American, treating ordinary Americans like criminals in order to work. We're also talking about a card that would quickly spread from work to voting to travel to pretty much every aspect of American life that requires identification."

More control. This won't do anything to stop the flow of illegals into the country. They will always come as long as there is money to be earned. It can only stop ... well, slow down since some come for other reasons too, when businesses stop giving them work. But that won't happen either because they can pay them under the table, a very low (relatively) wage and supply zero benefits except maybe water and some food. It is already illegal to give illegals employment so why would this card stop that? Like these guys that hire them are going to see that they don't have a card and not hire them? heh-heh ... It will be a very short time until someone is making illegal cards for them that actually work. It's no different than the existing underground that supplies illegal SS cards and drivers licenses, birth certificates, etc. What's more ... I believe the gov't fully knows this ... probably with more detail than I can imagine ... so why have them? Control, invasivness ... whatever ... it's no more about preventing illegals than the green movement (at gov't levels) is about protecting the government or the healthcare agenda is about actually providing healthcare. They aren't that concerned about the environment, especially since it is much better now than it was 40-50ish years ago which is why they now resort to silly things like global warming or climate change ... they can't find all that many examples anymore of gross pollution. They certainly exist, especially in so called developing countries, but it is no longer widespread enough to use them for something as big as a global agenda. They certainly are not concerned with our health. They want a lot less of us on the planet ... no more than half of one billion, about one fourteenth the current population. They want less elderly people because they are an economic drain.

I guess my Postal picture ID card is now worthless. Oh well!

I have to laugh at this because if they use a barcode as they do on mine any computer guru will be able to program a scanner to read it unless they come up with an entirely new barcode system and even then someone will figure out a way to read that. There is to much money to be made on the black market in stolen ID's. If it is a chip, those are easy to over come. They don't cook well in a microwave nor do they like being attached to a pair of jumper cables that are attached to a car on start up or even if you cut an extension chord, bare both sets of wires and attach them before plugging the extension chord into the wall. Me I like to weld them with my electric welder or just charge them up with a car battery charger.

The point is that like locks, they only keep honest people out. Someone somewhere will find a way to overcome them if there is enough money to be made by doing so. As Issachar and BN said, it ain't about job security, it is about tracking and control. The last time I looked that is the same thing that slavery is.

Totally agree.  

If there is an external component to this system, it is subject to being hacked.  Nothing is out of the reach of a driven hacker if it is accessable.

The only way to truly make it hacker proof is to:

Make it a part of the person.
Make it dependent on the living, functioning person for operation.
Control access to the device itself, so a hacker can't get raw copies to play with.

A chip should be tiny.  It should be programmable inside the person (insert a blank so the body is providing power, then upload the ID number.)  The programming should be dependent upon the body for the power to maintain the programming (loses all data if the contact with a living body is lost.)  It should be able to have the programming input mechanism destroyed after initial programming (like a PROM in a computer--destroy the input path, so no changes can be made.)  It should only contain an encrypted ID number--no actual personal data (that should be kept on an external network.)  It should be placed in the hand (ease of "swiping" across a scanner), or in the head (for those that have no hands/arms.)

Anything less, and the system becomes a hacking target.

With these safeguards in place, only the person is hackable ("Buy me a fruit pie, or I'll shoot you" kinds of stuff.)  But, since the person would need to access a point of sale device, or an ATM-type of terminal, I doubt even armed robery by coercion would be possible (too much observation taking place.)

A system like this would, from a worldly view, be the absolute end all of security.  And, it would be the ultimate in tracking ("No, officer, I wasn't at their house.  Check my chip track, and you'll see I was at the library.")  To those without the chip, it simply means you won't be able to buy or sell anything.  Even barter could be stopped with careful tracking of people involved and the items exchanged.  After all, a diamond ring moves from person "A" to person "B", that might well be a gift.  But, a bag of groceries does the same thing, that would not likely be a gift, but a black market deal.  Send in the "proactive" law enforcement to grab all involved, and sort out the specifics later.

Nah, it's cool.  I just keep posting this so that guests, when they see these things being implimented, might take notice, then take action.  When they see it, maybe the Holy Spirit will use the opportunity to lead them to the real truth we talk about here - Jesus Christ as the only, true, real Savior.

I have a dumb question concerning the BIOCHIP implant that I think all of this is leading to. We have a respected scientist saying that there will be a solar storm in the year 2012 that will screw up the electrical grid and knock us back to the 1850s. What effect would that possible solar storm have on implanted micro chips? If they are electrical then one would think they would be negatively effected....like a dead battery and they would fail to transmit info.

If that is the case then it looks like the biochip thing will actually come about just when the Bible predicts: The Tribulation. All this universal healthcare, new taxes, control of the finances, etc...is just the government trying so hard to get all information about us to hold over our heads, like extortion. The government wants to know and have access to EVERY DETAIL OF OUR LIVES. This is a monumental undertaking and one might scratch there head and say, 'how can they bio chip everyone on earth'?  Well...they erradicated small pox and that was years ago. We are much more technologically advanced and I see that it is very possible to have every human (the goal that is) biochipped.

So that makes me think that RAPTURE is close ...so very close, and that all heck is about to break lose on this planet. Back to my question: Could the solar storm disrupt the workings of implanted biochips? If so, the implementing of this dastardly plan would probably take place after the solar storm is over with.

A solar storm, even a massive one, would have no effect on devices like RFID, radios, etc.

The reason the power grid is in jeopardy is because of induction.  Basically, the powerlines will act like a giant radio antenna.  All of that electrical impulse will be "induced" into metal.  But, small metal objects, like circuit boards or forks or nails, and so on, will only gather a tiny amount of electricity.  So, the amount they can let flow into the items around them will also be extremely small.

Power lines, railroad rails, long metal fences and the like have a much bigger antenna, so to speak.  So, the amount of electricity they can catch is huge--massive in cases like power lines (that run for miles and miles.)  When they collect the electrical pulse, then release it, it could be so much bigger than the safety devices that are in place to prevent these surges, that it could just blow up pretty much everything attached to them.

And, you sure wouldn't want to be in outer space, or even way up in a commercial airplane, during such a time.
